A Serum Is Only as Good as Its Actives
In skincare, the word "serum" is used liberally. But not all serums are created equal. The difference between a serum that transforms skin and one that merely sits on it lies entirely in the quality, concentration, and compatibility of its active ingredients.
At Bio-art, we approach serum formulation the way a scientist approaches a hypothesis — with rigour, evidence, and a refusal to accept anything less than measurable results.
What Are Actives and Why Do They Matter?
Actives are the ingredients in a formulation that are clinically proven to produce a specific biological effect on the skin. Unlike base ingredients — which provide texture, hydration, or stability — actives are the ones doing the real work.
Common actives include Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), retinoids, niacinamide, peptides, hyaluronic acid, and AHAs/BHAs. Each targets a different skin concern, works at a different depth, and requires specific conditions to remain stable and effective.
Stability: The Challenge Most Brands Ignore
An active ingredient is only effective if it remains stable from the moment of formulation to the moment it reaches your skin. Vitamin C, for example, is notoriously unstable — it oxidises rapidly when exposed to light, air, or heat, rendering it ineffective before it even reaches you.
At Bio-art, we select stabilised derivatives and use airtight, opaque packaging specifically to protect the integrity of our actives. We do not formulate for shelf appeal. We formulate for shelf life and skin performance.
Penetration: Getting Actives Where They Need to Go
Efficacy is not just about what an ingredient can do — it is about whether it can reach the skin layer where it needs to act. The skin's barrier is designed to keep things out, which means molecular size, pH, and delivery systems all matter enormously.
Our formulations are developed with penetration in mind. We use encapsulation technology where appropriate, optimise pH for maximum absorption, and avoid ingredients that compete with or block the delivery of key actives.
Concentration: The Dose Makes the Difference
Many brands include actives at concentrations too low to produce any clinical effect — enough to list on the label, not enough to make a difference. We do not operate that way.
Every active in a Bio-art serum is present at a concentration validated by peer-reviewed research to be effective. We publish this information because we believe transparency is not optional — it is the foundation of trust.
Compatibility: Why We Formulate Holistically
Actives do not work in isolation. Some enhance each other — niacinamide and zinc, for example, work synergistically to regulate sebum and reduce inflammation. Others can destabilise or neutralise one another when combined incorrectly.
Our formulation process accounts for every interaction. We do not add ingredients because they are trending. We add them because they belong — and because the science supports their inclusion alongside every other component in the formula.
