The Problem With Beauty Packaging
The global beauty industry produces an estimated 120 billion units of packaging every year. The vast majority of it ends up in landfill. Pumps, mixed-material lids, foil liners, and multi-layer tubes are notoriously difficult to recycle — and most consumers have no practical way to do so even when they want to.
This is a structural problem, and it requires structural solutions. At Bio-art, we are committed to being part of that solution — not by making claims we cannot substantiate, but by making decisions we can stand behind.
Where We Started
When we launched Bio-art, packaging was already a central consideration — not an afterthought. We audited every material choice against three criteria: environmental impact, functional integrity (because packaging must protect the product), and end-of-life recyclability in the markets where our customers live.
That audit was humbling. It revealed that many of the most aesthetically appealing options were also the least sustainable. We made the decision early on that we would not prioritise appearance over responsibility.
Our Current Packaging Standards
Every Bio-art product is packaged using materials selected for minimal environmental impact. We use glass where it provides a functional advantage and where it is genuinely recyclable in our primary markets. We use post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastics where glass is not appropriate. We avoid mixed-material components that cannot be separated for recycling.
Our outer packaging — boxes, inserts, and shipping materials — is made from FSC-certified paper and printed with water-based inks. We have eliminated single-use plastic from our fulfilment process entirely.
Refill and Reuse: The Next Step
We are currently developing a refill programme for our core product range. The goal is to allow customers to return empty vessels for sanitisation and refilling, significantly reducing the volume of packaging that enters the waste stream.
This programme is in development because we want to do it properly — with a logistics model that is genuinely lower-impact than single-use, not one that creates more emissions through transportation than it saves through reuse. We will launch it when the numbers support it.
What We Are Still Working On
We believe in being honest about where we are, not just where we want to be. There are components in our current range — certain pump mechanisms and airless dispensers — that we have not yet found fully recyclable alternatives for without compromising product integrity or shelf life.
We are actively working with our suppliers to find solutions. Until we do, we will continue to disclose this openly rather than obscure it behind broad sustainability claims.
Our Commitment
Sustainable packaging is not a destination — it is a continuous process of improvement. We commit to reviewing our packaging choices annually, publishing our progress, and holding ourselves accountable to the standards we set. Because the environment does not benefit from good intentions. It benefits from action.
